Trip in New Foundland / ニューファウンドランド旅行

We went to Ed’s hometown, country villege in New Foundland. His hometown is called Summerford and it takes about 1 hour north of Gandar airport. It is located almost the north east corner of Canada. If I describe similarity in Japan, it is like Abashiri. (Map)

エドの実家、ニューファウンドランドの田舎町に行ってきました。実家はSummerfordという、Gandarの空港から１時間弱北に上がったところにあります。場所は、カナダの北東のはずれにあります。日本でいうと網走のあたりかな？（地図）

The highlight of the trip was a beach at Musgrave, Strong Island, iceberg, blueberry picking and a boat ride.

It took about an hour to get to the beach at Musgrave. The beach was very clean and we saw some people swimming. The weather was warm and about about 23 degree. But water was freezing cold. When you put your feet in for 10 minutes, I feel paralized and I couldn’t stand but some Newfie was swimming…I felt the culture here. Next to the Musgrave beach, there was a memorial park for a crushed airforce craft. I couldn’t believe thatan actual crushed aircraft was sitting right there. They also made a replica of the aircraft. It was a fun visit here. The fish burger that I had in this town was the amazing.

For the next trip, we went to Strong Island on the other side of Summerford. We drive to the end of the road and then walked. We walked around the forest about an hour and shore after. I loved their fresh air and clean water. I tried to find sea urchin or clams or anything but the tide was full and I couldn’t find anything. We saw Ed’s sister’s house on the other side. It was like a castle, it stood out so much and so easy to find.

Then his mom called and told us that icebergs are getting closer to the shore so we drove to Twillingate, where its famous tourist spot for icebergs. There were 2 big ice plates coming closer to New Foundland and there were some broken one arriving to here. It sounds late for the season but it must be a global warming effect. We saw icebergs close but it was about 2 inch. I would love to see them much closer.

Next morning, we woke up early and went to blueberry picking. Ed’s mom knew the spot and we drove to the spot took us about a half an hour. There were already some cars here and it made me a bit nervous to find a spot sooner but I didn’t need to. There were so many spots and you can basiclaly pick anywhere. The first spot was already picked by somebody so we found some but they were smaller berries.

We changed the spot and we found the place where it was hidden in a bush. There were no one entered here and so many blueberries everywhere. The taste was really sweet and they were much bigger berries. When you sit down in one spot, you can’t move for 10 minutes. It was that many. Everyone were so excited to pick in this spot. It was a blueberry heaven.

In the next day, the weather wasn’t so good but his old friend took us to a boat ride with his sister and her hasband. The weather wasn’t good, clouds looked really dark, and we didn’t see any boats around. It made me a bit nervous at the bigining but it was actually pretty refreshing ride. Islands in this area were fjord-like islands and it looked interesting shapes all arounds. Also, it was in the inlet and it was surrounded by islands and wave was calm. It felt like a lake more than ocean. Though, pray from the wave was a bit salty. I would love to go for muscle or capling picking next trip in a warmer weather.

It was only 5 days trip in New Foundland at this time. We didn’t relax much and it was busy trip but it is the one of the place that I would love to go back again. His mom cooked us famous moose dinner and his sister cooked us a good dinners as well. It was all nice and nice to meet all their friends as well. I would love to go to the designer island, Fogo next time.

旅行のハイライトは、Musgraveのビーチ、Strong島、氷山、ブルーベリー狩りにボート乗り。

Musgraveのビーチは、Summerfordから約１時間ほどドライブした場所にある、とてもきれいなビーチ。結構人もおり、泳いでいる人もちょろちょろといる。気温は２３度位あり、結構暖かいのですが、水はというと死ぬほど冷たい。１０秒ほど漬けておくと耐えられないくらいに足がしびれてくる。そんな中、ニューフィーは泳いでるし。ちょっと文化を感じました。Musgraveビーチのそばには戦闘機が不時着したメモリアルパークがあり、当時の戦闘機がそのまま置いてありちょっとびっくりしました。その隣にはレプリカが飾ってあり、面白かったです。ここの村で食べた、フィッシュバーガーめちゃくちゃうまかった☆

続いて、Summerfordの対岸にあるStrong島に行ってきました。行けるところまでは車で行き、そこからは徒歩。森の中を約１時間歩きまわり、その後、海岸を歩いてきました。ほんと自然で水も空気も澄んでいる。ウニとか貝とか探してみたのですが、残念ながら満ち潮で何も見つけられませんでした。対岸には、お姉ちゃんの家が見えたのですが、ほんとに大きなお城。対岸にくっきりと見えました。

その後、エドの母親から電話があり、氷山がかなり近づいて来ているとので、Twillingateという流氷で有名な観光名所まで行ってきました。ちょうど２つの大きな氷山プレートが流れてきているらしく、その中の崩れた物がごろごろとこのあたりに到着しているとの事。季節的に遅い気もするのだが、地球温暖化という事で自分で解釈。近くと言っても、肉眼で見えて３センチほどなので、もっと近くで見たかったな。

その次の日は、早起きをしてブルーベリー狩りへと行ってきました。エドのおばちゃんがスポットを知っているらしく、３０分ほどドライブしてスポットに到着。何台かの車が先に来ており、早く場所を取らないと不安にもなったが、そんな心配全く要りませんでした。スポットがかなりあり、ほんとにブルーベリーの取り放題。一つ目のスポットは、既に一度取られた後で、小柄な粒ばかりでした。

場所を換えて、茂みの中で見えないスポットを発見。誰も入っていない場所で、そこはほんとに取りたい放題のブルーベリー。味もめちゃくちゃ甘くて大きな粒ばかり。１か所の場所に腰を下ろすと、次のスポットに移動するまで１０分ほどかかる位、辺り一面にブルーベリー。みんなウヒョウヒョ言いながら取ってました。ほんとブルーベリー天国でした。

最後の日には、少し天気が悪かったのですが、幼馴染の人がボートに乗せてくれるという事で、お姉さんとその旦那さんとでボート乗りに行ってきました。天気が悪く、雲行きも悪く、周りにボート一台も見られない。ちょっと不安になりながらも、気持ちのいいボート乗りでした。島の景色がフィヨルド系が多いのか、変わった形の島が多かった。あと、入り江だったので、辺り一面島がよく見えて波もやさしく、海というより湖の感じがしました。たまに押し寄せる水しぶきはしょっぱかったですが。次回は、もうちょっと暖かい時期にムール貝やシシャモ取りも兼ねて行きたいな。

たった５日間のニューファウンドランド旅行。あんまりのんびりも出来ず、忙しい毎日だったのですが、また行きたい場所の一つです。おばちゃんには、名物ムース料理もいただきましたし、お姉ちゃんの手料理もいろいろといただきました。いろんな人にも会えて、ほんと楽しい旅行でした。次回は、デザイナー島のFogoまで行きたいな。
